North Florida African American Corridor (NFAAC) was founded in May 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic as a response to a clear need in the Apalachicola Florida Hill community and a collective vision for the future preservation of the cultural legacy of people of African descent. Apalachicola’s historic Black neighborhood, known as the Hill, is a close-knit community that, as recent as the 1960s, was a vibrant area with family homes, a thriving business district, a Black public elementary and high school, and a Black Catholic school grades 1st to 8th led by nuns of the Sisters of the Holy Family, an African American Order, from New Orleans, LA. Within the community were several African American churches and fraternal organizations.

After decades of economic disinvestment by the City and County and the collapse of the seafood industry, the community is under threat. There are few jobs on the Hill, too many vacant homes, and the erasure of African American heritage looms large, posing severe challenges to the community and the preservation of its history.

our mission

NFAAC’s mission is to promote community wellbeing and preserve the cultural and historical contributions of North Florida residents of African descent through education, preservation efforts, strategic alliances, and active community engagement.

We aim to rescue, curate, and share the cultural legacy of the Hill community by educating, amplifying, and preserving its local history. With the support of stakeholders, community members, and government partners, we will transform what was once considered a lost legacy into a sustainable respect for those who left an indelible mark on the community, the state, and the nation.

Our vision for the North Florida African American Corridor (NFAAC) is to celebrate and amplify the rich history and vibrant traditions of North Florida residents. We strive to strengthen social cohesion by promoting shared values, preserving cultural heritage and history, and fostering community pride.
